With casting and production underway on the sequel to Marvel Comics’ breakout hit Guardians of the Galaxy, we’ve gotten some news from writer/director James Gunn: Chris Sullivan, Elizabeth Debicki, and Pom Klementieff are all involved with the production. Of those three, the only one we know of that has a role so far is Klementieff (Oldboy and Hacker’s Game) as Mantis.
For those that don’t know here’s who Mantis is:
Via the Marvel Wiki: Mantis was the daughter of Gustav Brandt and Lua Nguyen. While a child, she was trained by the alien Priests of Pama, a sect of the Kree, who believed that she might become the “Celestial Madonna”. She excelled in her martial arts studies, which landed her the name “Mantis”. Being the protectors of the Cotati, the Priests of Pama enhanced her mind giving her telepathic abilities. On her 18th birthday, she was mind wiped and was given false memories of a childhood as an orphan in Vietnam, in order for her to experience a regular human life, which would be an aid for her to become a Celestial Madonna.
With all that being said, the casting news that’s got everyone buzzing is Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone joining GOTG2 as a yet unnamed characters. The first thought out of the mouths of fans was that Russell or Stallone would be playing J’Son of Spartax, father to Chris Pratt’s character, Peter Quill. However, James Gunn has already stated that J’Son does not exist in the MCU.
So who could ‘Tango and Cash’ be playing? Let’s go over several options for them.
The leader of the Eternals on Titan and father to Thanos and Eros (Starfox), this could be a role Russell or Stallone takes on to help pave the way for the Guardians to obtain info on Thanos. He is a fairly big player in the Marvel Cosmic Universe and would be an interesting choice.
A former member of the Nova Corps that is a big anthropomorphic white tiger. He is now a cyborg due to injuries sustained fighting the Chitauri, he currently serves them. This would be a mocap and voiceover job, which is possible but not likely.
Most comic fans would be familiar with Rom the Spaceknight who had his own series in the ’80s, and this would be a similar role that would allow Russell or Stallone to be mostly covered in armor and battle tons of space baddies. Either one could play the leader of the Spaceknights.
Eon is a living Elder of the Universe and originally came from a pocket dimension. He is a custodian for the MCU and appoints the current protector of the universe. Eon created the quantum bands that have been worn by many Marvel heroes such as Quasar and Captain Marvel. This again would be a mocap voiceover role for Russell or Stallone but one that could possibly span across several movies.
Another Elder of the Universe, Grandmaster spends his time playing games and pitting civilizations against each other for his amusement and to learn about them. Not quite a bad guy, not quite a good guy, this one’s a reach.
Yeah, yeah, we know Samuel L. Jackson already plays Fury in the MCU; but who said he was the original Fury? So how does fury fit into the Cosmic MU? Well, in ‘Original Sin’ we learn that the Fury we’ve know on Earth was an L.M.D. the whole time and that the real Fury was in space the whole time, keeping Earth from being targeted by aliens wanting to destroy it. He was known as The Watcher on The Wall. Russell or Stallone could play Fury from WWII who had the Infinity Formula to keep him young. Eventually the formula ran out and Fury began to age. In the comics, his son is Nick Fury Jr., a character who looks just like the Sam Jackson version… hmmmm. This is our pick for who either of them should be, but only time will tell.
